LUNGRANG

Lungrang is a village located in the western part of Senthang District, Hakha Township, Chin State, Myanmar. It lies approximately at 22°13′12″ North and 93°35′50″ East, at an elevation of around 1,415 meters (4,642 feet) above sea level. The village is about 65 miles from Hakha.

Lungrang was founded in AD 1450 by Pu Cang Zaw (Innhmai) from Aika Village. He later invited Pu Zu Thiang (Khuplal) to join him. It is said that Pu Zu Thiang requested the thigh of an elephant before agreeing to settle, after which the Khuplal clans joined Pu Cang Zaw. Formerly, the Khuplal families and clans lived in a place called Innhmun, which is now near Lungrang.

Lungrang lies at the border of Hakha Township, Thantlang Township, and Matupi Township. At one point, the villagers brought Pu Tia Thua, originally from Hausen Village and living in Leitak Village, to serve as their village chief. Pu Tia Thua’s family was known as the Zupi Chung family. However, when the Zupi family was unable to protect the village from enemies, the people brought Pu Mang Ceu from Surkhua Village as their chief. Leadership then passed down through his line: Pu Khua Hnin (his son), Ceu Khar (son of Khua Hnin), and Mang Hmung (son of Ceu Khar). Pu Mang Hmung’s position was eventually inherited by Pu Van Kio, chief of Surkhua.

When the British arrived, Lungrang villagers fought against them. During the conflict, the British shot and killed Sui Ling. On April 18, 1910, the British appointed Pu Za Kip, son of Pu Lian Thang, as village chief. They offered to build a mission school in the village, but he refused. Lunghnam Village was later founded by Pu Mang Hreng (Lailung family) from Lungrang.

During the British invasion, Lu Hlway Hmon and Pu Kar Don served as village chiefs. In the Lairal War (1917–1918), the British fined Lungrang Rs 420.

Lungrang is known for celebrating the Khuangcawi Festival (in which a lady is lifted by a crowd) and for its unique “Conquered Dance.” The people of Lungrang were also the first in Senthang to specialize in dentistry; some traveled to Mizoram State, India, to work in the field and earn their income.

Geography

  • East: Surkhua City

  • Southeast: Aika and Lungkhin villages

  • North: Phaizawng Village

  • West: Thangaw Village and Khuahrang Village

The Bawinu River runs along the eastern side of Lungrang. It is the largest river in Hakha Township, home to many fish species, and serves as a source of livelihood for villagers. Mount Bawipa Tlang, located to the north, is the second-highest mountain in Chin State, reaching 9,080 feet. It is rich in wildlife and flowers, and its peak lies near Lungrang’s headland, marking the border between Senthang District and Zophei District.

Before 1957, Lungrang had about 300 households, but after the founding of Leipi Village and Ohhla Village in Magwe Region, some residents moved there.

Education
A private school was established in 1945. In 1948, the government took over and continued it as a private school. In 1974, it was upgraded to a middle school and officially recognized by the government in 1983. On November 29, 2019, it was further promoted to a high school.

Religion
Christianity was introduced in Lungrang in 1930 by Rev. Za Ling (B). Until 1970, most villagers practiced the Laiphung religion. Today, there are five churches in the village:

  1. Lungrang Baptist Church (LBC)

  2. Assembly of God Church

  3. Khuathar Baptist Church (KBC)

  4. Roman Catholic Church

  5. Immanuel Baptist Church (IBC)

Pastors serving in the churches include:
